Appearance
Posts are updates and notes you can write inside a hoard or community. They support Markdown formatting, allowing you to create rich, expressive content with headings, lists, links, code blocks, and more.
The post editor includes a formatting toolbar and a live preview so you can see exactly how your post will look before publishing.
The toolbar provides quick-access buttons for common formatting:
| Button | What it does | Markdown syntax |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Makes text bold | **text** |
| Italic | Makes text italic | *text* |
| Heading | Inserts a heading | ## text |
| Link | Inserts a hyperlink | [text](url) |
| Ordered List | Starts a numbered list | 1. item |
| Unordered List | Starts a bullet list | - item |
| Code Block | Inserts a code fence | ```code``` |
You can also select text and then click a toolbar button to wrap the selection with the appropriate syntax.
Click the Preview button to switch from the text editor to a rendered preview. The preview updates in real time as you type. Switch back to Write mode to continue editing.
Posts support the following Markdown elements:
| Element | Syntax | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Headings | # H1 through ###### H6 | Section titles |
| Bold | **bold** | bold |
| Italic | *italic* | italic |
| Strikethrough | ~~deleted~~ | |
| Links | [text](url) | Clickable hyperlinks |
| Images | | Embedded images |
| Ordered lists | 1. item | Numbered lists |
| Unordered lists | - item | Bullet lists |
| Inline code | `code` | code |
| Code blocks | ```lang | Multi-line code with syntax highlighting |
| Blockquotes | > quote | Indented quotations |
| Horizontal rules | --- | Visual dividers |
| Tables | ` | col |
Comments on posts also support Markdown, with a few restrictions:
Post authors can turn off comments on their own posts. Open the post's edit dialog and switch on Disable comments. This hides the comment box for everyone, including you, and blocks new comments from being posted. Existing comments stay visible; switching it back off lets people comment again.
Posts are shown on a timeline rather than a flat list. They run newest first, grouped under a heading for each month, with each post's day marked on the rail down the left. The dotted stretches of rail between posts stand for the time that passed between them, so a quiet year looks quiet at a glance.
A year index sits beside the timeline (above it on narrow screens). Click a year to jump to that year's newest posts. The section you land on lights up briefly so it is easy to see where you ended up.
Your profile has a Posts tab that collects everything you have posted, across every hoard and community, on one timeline. Each post says which hoard or community it was posted in, and the name links back there.
Other people see the same tab on your profile, but only the posts they are allowed to see. A private post stays yours alone, a friends-only post shows to your friends, and posts in hoards they cannot view do not appear.
Post content can be up to 10,000 characters long. The editor displays a character count when you approach the limit.
If you write a post without any Markdown syntax, it will display exactly as you typed it, with line breaks and whitespace preserved. Existing posts created before Markdown support was added will continue to display correctly.
All rendered Markdown is sanitized before display. This means:
onclick) are strippedYou don't need to worry about this as a user, since it happens automatically in the background.
TIP
You can write posts using plain text just like before. Markdown formatting is entirely optional.
